History
Saco Lodge No. 9 F & A. M. is located on Main Street in Saco, Maine in the Masonic Block building that also houses the offices of Saco Biddeford Savings Institution.
Since 1802 when the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts granted the charter, Saco Lodge has been active in the community. Jeremiah Hill, our first master, was a Revolutionary War Captain who fought in the battle of Saratoga, was Town Clerk of Biddeford and was a Representative in the Massachusetts legislature. Other charter members also took part in the Revolutionary War, Joseph Leland who fought at Bunker Hill and Ephraim Ridlon who was aid de camp to Gen. Henry Knox.
We have been at our current address since 1907. Together with the Saco Biddeford Savings Institution we are the only original tenants of the building.
Several Saco Lodge members have contributed greatly to the community and have been honored in return.
- Burns School Cushman Wing - Wor. Howard Cushman
- Young School – Bro. Theodore Young
- Thornton Academy Linnell Gymnasium – Bro. William Linnell
- Fairfield School Moody Gymnaisum – Bro. Robert Moody
Over the years, members have come from all walks of life, from mayors of Saco to business men, engineers, farmers, doctors and lawyers, owners and employees, many have belonged. Today we have members from Saco and the surrounding communities.
We actively support the Bikes for Books Programs having given away 300 bikes to the local elementary schools.
